Statement by Associated Industries of Florida President Barney Bishop
Regarding House Vote to Abolish Joint and Several Liability

March 16, 2006

TALLAHASSEE —“The business community applauds House members for their overwhelming support of HB 145, which would abolish joint and several liability in Florida. This legislation is a matter of fundamental fairness – and fairness is what the people and business community in this state deserve.

“Today’s vote represents a decisive win against the powerful pressures of the trial bar. By abolishing joint and several liability, we can return fairness to our legal system, holding those responsible in a lawsuit for just their fair share of the damages, instead of allowing for lawsuits targeting deep-pocket defendants.

“We commend the efforts of bill sponsor Representative Don Brown and House Speaker Allan Bense to halt the ever increasing abuses of our justice system and to bring about a fair, more balanced system that works for the people, not against them.”
