Associated Industries of Florida Names Rep. Charles Dean as a 2007 Champion for Business Award Winner

June 1, 2007

Tallahassee – Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) is pleased to announce Representative Charlie Dean (R-Inverness) will receive a  “2007 Champion for Business Award” for his commitment to free market principles and improving Florida’s business climate.

According to Barney Bishop, AIF President and CEO, “Representative Dean has been a steadfast supporter for thousands of small business owners in Florida.  His attention to the needs of employers makes him an easy choice as a Champion for Business.  He has worked hard to ensure billions of dollars in tax cuts and insurance-rate relief, as well as provided staunch support for tort reform.  AIF is proud to salute Charlie’s commitment to free market principles and his dedication to improve the quality of life for all Floridians.”

As Chairman of the House Safety and Security Council, Representative Dean thwarted attempts by the trial bar to undermine the repeal of Joint & Several Liability, a move that would have resulted in businesses and people paying more than their fair share in legal proceedings.  In addition, Representative Dean sponsored and passed legislation this year, which helped businesses and contractors comply with the Jessica Lunsford Act by establishing uniform guidelines and procedures while doing away with multiple and costly background screening requirements while keeping the integrity of the original law.

The “Champion Awards” are presented annually to leaders who have proven to be strong and forceful advocates of business. They have supported meaningful and often controversial pro-business legislation that will benefit Florida employers.   Each year, a very small group out of the 160 member Florida Legislature will be picked to receive this prestigious award. Other Champions for Business winners will be announced by AIF this summer.
